Citizenship in Slovenia
The regular way of acquiring Slovenian citizenship is via naturalization. This is a lengthy and hard to achieve process compared to some other options. It does not just require the foreigner to live in Slovenia legally for a period of 10 years (on the basis of valid Slovenia residence permit), but there are other conditions as well.
One of them is living in Slovenia without any major interruptions for the past 5 years. In practice this means the foreigner has to spend most of his time Slovenia, before successfully applying. Another is learning basic Slovenian and passing the exam. For many foreigners the most problematic is the condition that one has to renounce his previous citizenship.
Slovenian Citizenship by descent
Slovenian citizenship by descent or by repatriation or sometimes called by heritage is an easier and faster way of acquiring citizenship in Slovenia. It still is a lengthy process that requires several conditions to be met, however one does not need to live in Slovenia for 10 years or renounce his previous citizenship. There are two main options that are offered by Slovenian law. The first is meant for foreigners that have ancestors of up to second generation and have an active connection with Slovenia and the second one is meant for foreigners that have ancestors of up to fourth generation and are prepared to live in Slovenia for at least one year on a basis of a Slovenia residence permit. Both options of Slovenian citizenship by descent should first be discussed with an immigration lawyer in Slovenia, since there are many details one has to be aware of before applying for any of them. Our immigration lawyers offer legal support and representation in both immigration and citizenship procedures.
