Family reunification in Slovenia

A Slovenia residence permit for the purpose of family reunification is intended for a foreigner who already legally resides in Slovenia to invite his immediate family members to live with him in Slovenia on the basis of family reunification in Slovenia. Such a Slovenia residence permit for family reunion must be renewed until a family member has obtained a permanent residence permit for a family member. A foreigner who obtains a permanent residence permit for a family member has an open labor market in Slovenia, which means that he or she is free to work without restrictions, open a company like any citizen of the Republic of Slovenia.

Slovenia permanent residence permits for a family member also give them virtually all the other rights that Slovenian citizens have. Family reunification in Slovenia is primarily meant for close family members like spouse, unmarried children of the foreigner, his/her parents provided that they are dependent from the foreigner. A foreigner may start the process of family reunion in Slovenia after s/he has been a legal resident in the Republic of Slovenia for at least two years (there are several exceptions however). The foreigner who receives a Slovenia permanent residence permit for a family member keeps it even in the event of a divorce or death of the partner who started the process of family reunification in Slovenia. On the other hand, the temporary residence permit for a family member may be annuled in such cases and family reunion in Slovenia denied.

Slovenian residence permit

The Slovenia immigration rules require that the foreigner be in matrimony with a slovenian citizen for at least two years, of which one year in Slovenia in order to acquire a Slovenia permanent residence. The Slovenian residence permit for a family member of a Slovenian citizen or for an EU citizen is somewhat different than if it were a foreign national from a third country. The difference is mainly in obtaining a Slovenia permanent residence permit for a family member. In the case of a Slovenian or an EU citizen, his / her family members may apply for a Slovenia permanent residence permit for a family member only after two years of uninterrupted legal residence in the Republic of Slovenia.
